Two Poems by Natasha Heller spacer Two Poems by Natasha Heller
BY: Natasha Heller
We have long believed that one test of being too busy is whether we have time for poetry—if not, we are too busy. Poetry resists being rushed, insisting instead that the words, phrases, lines and metaphors be savored, slowly, as if words woven together with truth and beauty really mattered. It is a pleasure to introduce Natasha Heller in her first submission to Critique.

U2: All That You Can't Leave Behind (2000) spacer U2: All That You Can't Leave Behind (2000)

For their fans (like me), the name says it all. But for those of you who aren’t as familiar with them, let me throw out a few points that might give you reason to pay attention to this rock and roll band.

Understanding Scripture Correctly (I) spacer Understanding Scripture Correctly (I)
BY: Denis Haack
It is a dangerous conceit to imagine that when we read the text of Scripture we do so from an entirely neutral vantage point. I must never assume that an interpretation is obviously correct merely because it is obvious to me.

Understanding Scripture correctly (II) spacer Understanding Scripture correctly (II)
BY: Denis Haack
You are attending a small group Bible study and someone comments, “Jesus came into a broken, fallen world. The problem in this case is hunger, the need to eat, and as the Redeemer he solves the problem with a special supply of food. Won’t it be great in heaven when we won’t need food any more?” How do you respond?

Understanding the Bible (John Stott; 1972, 1984, 2001) spacer Understanding the Bible (John Stott; 1972, 1984, 2001)

Scripture molds our mind and imagination, we grow in discernment, the ability to chart a path through the myriad choices presented to us in our post-Christian pluralistic world.

Using Words to Wound Instead of Heal spacer Using Words to Wound Instead of Heal
BY: Denis Haack
Words have the power to hurt, to cause shame, to instill fear, to wound so deeply that being beat up seemed preferable. It’s simply not true that words can never harm you. Some can tear at the fabric of your soul.

V for Vendetta (James McTeigue, 2006) spacer V for Vendetta (James McTeigue, 2006)
BY: Steve Froehlich
Vendetta is a thrilling, swash-buckling, sensational political rant against an Orwellian caricature of all that’s evil in the world—of the bureaucracies of state, religion, and corporate greed; of the fascist abuse of power that subjugates art and sexuality.

spacer On my desk is a little vase of flowers cut from our yard, a little reminder of the beauty that is all around if we only have eyes to see. I've needed that reminder after reading the latest news of the horrific oil spill in the Gulf. Such glory in this world, such brokenness. Such hope, such deep need for redemption. These are the realities of life and death we seek to explore on this web site. Thank you for visiting.
